Week of October 01, 2006 - "The Foley Scandal"
Of course one of the top teen-tech stories this week was about teen pages and congressmen instant messaging on Capitol Hill, in particular former Congressman Mark Foley in what has quickly become known as "the Foley scandal".
Week of October 08, 2006 - "Social networks: Powerful change agents?"
Google's acquisition of YouTube was all over tech news this past week, and I'll get to that (see "In other news"), but there's an interesting trend to highlight in youth-tech news.
Week of October 15, 2006 - "Social sites for teens, others"
As the number of social-networking sites, as well as the number of special-interest niches they're filling, grows parents and teens should know there are social sites specifically targeting teens. It's hard to tell if they're safer, but they can be more pleasant to use for young people who just want to socialize with their peers. This week a look at some reviewed by teens themselves.
Week of October 22, 2006 - "IMs at fault?"
The focus of online-safety risks temporarily shifted from social networking back to instant messaging when the scandal about former Congressman Mark Foley and congressional pages hit the news. But was IM actually the source of the problem? Here's some perspective on that, as well as what you might call the good news about bad news involving online technologies and kids.
Week of October 29, 2006 - "Parenting social networkers"
As social-networking sites multiply, so do articles about parenting their most avid users. This is great. It means the coverage is no longer just about sexual predation (there are other, non-criminal risks we all need to be discussing). So the reporting is getting more granular and helpful to parents.
